“The use of technology is instrumental in my research; it is a spur for the imagination and at the same represents the counter alter of the illusion that we are free…”
Filippo Ciavoli Cortelli
As a young artist, he worked principally in Pietrasanta, his native city, where he studied under maestro Igor Mitoraj in 1992. He obtained his Diploma in Sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara in 2000. he collaborated with artists Giò Pomodoro, Bruto Pomodoro e Andy Goldsworthy. He participated in his first group exhibition in 2005, “Premio OPEN-ART”, in the Sale del Bramante in Rome. His first recognition arrived in 2006, winning the “Concorso internazionale per opera d'arte in Omaggio alle donne e agli uomini che hanno dato vita alla città di Carbonia” (International contest for art works in homage to the men and women who gave their lives for the city of Carbonia), instituted in the Sardinian city.
In 2007 in Piazza Santa Maria Novella in Florence, the fifth edition of ARTOUR-O allowed trade magazines and art galleries to meet up with groups of emerging artists – among whom Filippo Ciavoli Cortelli – with Galleria Barbara Paci in Pietrasanta. In 2008, together with 12 other artists, he participated in ONLY LOCALS, curated by Enrico Mattei and by the Vehicle Art Gallery at the venue Ex Scuderie Granducali Medicee in Seravezza: a heterogeneous exhibition whose final purpose was to focus the attention on art and culture, with the passion for art as its common thread. That same year he won the Premio Municipality of Chignolo d'Isola (Bergamo) inside PREMIO AGAZZI.
2012 marked the year of the first solo exhibition, ALFONSO CANNAVACCIUOLO, FILIPPO CIAVOLI, PETE KELLER, at Galleria Mimmo Scognamiglio Artecontemporanea in Milan, with whom he had already collaborated the year before for the group show “What? and in 2010 for “Identity Theft”. In 2014, he won third place in the second edition of the Henraux Foundation Award, in memory of Erminio Cidonio, with the work entitled "Corallo" that underscores the dualisms seaside-mountains and tradition-innovation typical of the Apuan-Versilia territory. Still in 2014, he participated in the group exhibition on Italian contemporary art of the 1990s “Liberitutti” taking place in Turin, with Pietrasanta’s Galleria Giovanni Bonelli.
He held his last solo exhibition in 2015: RADICEQUADRATADIDUE (of Pythagorean inspiration), at the Santo Spirito-Ex Carceri venue, in Nola, in the province of Naples and DE PO SI TO, Chiostro di Santa maria la Nova, Napoli. The trend typical of the last few years has also ben to work on other materials such as paper or Plexiglas, although continuing to prefer “noble” sculpture with marble and bronze. He is also part of the sound experimentation quartet VipCancro.
