Biography

Marcello Tommasi’s artistic education began thanks to his father Leone (sculptor) and brothers Riccardo (painter) and Luigi (caster).  He completed classical studies in 1947 at the G. Carducci High School in Viareggio and studied Literature at Florence University. At the same time, he attended the studio of Pietro Annigoni where he studied drawing, painting and gradually began focusing on sculpture. In 1966 he received a PhD in History of Art with a thesis on Pietro Tacca, of whom he wrote a biography later. In 1966 he became a member of the Accademia delle Arti e del Disegno and was appointed Vice-President in 1988.

He started to exhibit in 1951 taking part in the VI Quadriennale d'Arte in Rome, and held his first solo exhibition in 1955 at Galleria degli Artisti in Milan. Marco Vecchio; "Apollo e Dafne" 1983, Piazza della Libertà; and further still: "Carolina" 1968, bronze statue, Place G. Perné, Paris; "Fontaine de la Liberté" 1979, Place L. Blum, Paris; "Ilaria", bronze statue, Town Hall entrance, Charenton-le-Pont, France; "Fontana per Osvaldo Martini" 1981, and "Deposizione e Resurrezione" 1982, Cappella Martini, Castelfranco di Sotto, Pisa; "Alcione" 1986, bronze high-relief, Cassa di Risparmio, Prato; "Crocifisso" 1985, bronze, Chiesa di S. Among his main recognitions, of note are: I Prize "Concorso Nazionale di Scultura" organized by the Arezzo Chamber of Commerce, (during the IV Centenary of Michelangelo’s death with "La Conversione di Saulo", which today is preserved at the Museo di Scultura of Caprese Michelangelo, 1964); Silver Medal 1972 and Vermeil Medal 1976, Bimillennial Plaque, Paris; he was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre des Artes et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture in 1988.

He published several books including: "Metamorphoses d'Ovide" 1974, art book with lithographs; "Metamorfosi di Ovidio" 1975, art book with lithographs; " Don Chisciotte" 1977, folder with engravings; "L'asini d'oro" art book with lithographs. He lived and worked between Florence and Pietrasanta, where, in 2002, he held art courses at his studio in Via Marconi. He also created works at the Ugo Antognazzi, Franco Cervietti, Paolo Bresciani, Scultur Kamin and Antonio Castaman laboratories and at the Tommasi and Del Chiaro foundries.
