Studio Sem is one of the most prestigious and particular studios in Pietrasanta; it was founded in the 1950s by the charismatic Sem Ghelardini (1927-1997), one of the first craftsmen to collaborate with famous artists like Henry Moore, Joan Mirò, Henri Georges Adam and other well-known names belonging to that first wave of contemporary art which reached Versilia in the 1960s. With its 50 years tradition in hosting young sculptors from all over the world, today it continues o be teeming with an astonishing variety of art.

Keara McMartin (director of studies and an artist herself) explains that “by hosting emerging artists, Sem wanted to integrate contemporary art and craftsman traditions. Working so closely with the artist, the craftsman is able to see the original idea pass through the different phases of development leading to the final sculpture, mutually enriching both parties”. The studio often collaborates with its artists, produces sculptures for private individuals, carries out public tenders on a large scale as well as thematic projects for cruise liners. The works are exhibited in a public gallery where visitors can chat with the artists and craftsmen amid the dust and incessant clatter of the tools used in the processing of the marble.
